The letter he wrote to the Veteran Affairs dept. requesting psychiatric help is kind of sad to read, considering his pleas went unanswered. This rejection probably explains his later hostility for psychiatry & psychology. The thinking is that he started dianetics, the precursor for scientology, in an attempt to fix his own psychological problems. The guy was quite the scam artist and a generally terrible person -- but I wonder how things would've turned out had he received the help that he needed.
